What is the Integrative Knowledge Portfolio Process? It is:
1. a method that helps people make sense of their many different hidden learning experiences.
2. a set of skills that people develop identify and organize different types of knowledge.
3. a place where people make their purpose, strengths, learning and impact visible.
For example, as a STEM student at the University of Michigan, Alex Turin was known to be smart and hard-working but he had a hard time recognizing all that he knew and was capable of achieving. Going through the Integrative Knowledge Portfolio Process (IKPP) helped him make sense of his many different learning experiences and clarify what he wanted to do with his life. More importantly, he also learned how to support his peers in finding their strengths and purpose too. He decided to apply to medical school and was accepted at his first choice of institutions: Northwestern University. His portfolio (see below) was essential to his success:
Research shows that Alex’s experience is not at all unique. When students who go through the Integrative Knowledge Portfolio Process, they develop confidence, clarity, and a deep sense of purpose. The develop the kinds of soft skills that are necessary for increased employability and lifelong learning, including the capacity to ask questions in ways that bring out other people’s hidden knowledge, strengths and sources of resilience.
